IPL Hair Removal
Intense pulse light (ILP) is a relatively new technique designed to remove hair. The device generates a beam of light which is aimed at the hair follicles. The light beam is absorbed by the hair follicle resulting in the destruction of the organ. Once the hair follicle is damaged, the hair production is diminished and the hair can easily be removed. Over the ensuing few days, the residual hair falls off. Unlike lasers, IPL causes minimal damage to the surrounding skin and other structures.
The one major difference between IPL and laser is that the former does not use a single wavelength to target the hair follicle. The wavelength is dependent of the duration of exposure and energy level of IPL. Further, the IPL hand piece covers a much larger surface than a laser and thus, the procedure is performed much faster. This technology is more geared towards removing hair from large areas of the body like the back, chest or legs.
IPL is ideal for individual with light skin and dark hairs. Individuals who have dark skin generally do not respond as well. Hair removal by the IPL systems is done in a number of spas and clinics. The time required to remove hair is dependent on the area treated.
Prior to the procedure, it is highly recommended that one stay out of the sun for at least 4-6 weeks to allow the skin to regain its normal color.
Because hair grows in phases, each treatment only destroys the active growth phase. Thus, most individuals require anywhere from 2-5 treatment sessions.
